CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZE AND SHAPE OF YOUR DINING TABLE

We know that everyone is different. Different house and room sizes, family, and use can all vary between people. This is why we always love building custom made products so that the solid wood furniture piece you buy from us is perfectly tailored to your needs. When it comes to dining tables, you want to make sure you’re comfortable and have ample space for yourself, your family members, and anyone else who might join you at the table. This has also inspired us to design and create several different styles for our furniture collection so that everyone can find something that will suit them. Below are some of the things to consider when you’re choosing your custom dining table to make sure it is perfect for your space.

ROOM SPACE

First thing to consider is the size of your space where your dining table will be going. You should have about 3 feet (36 inches) of space between your table and the walls. This amount of space is enough to allow you to slide your chair out comfortably.

This is only a guide however and depending on your room you might need to improvise a bit, especially if you live in a condo or have a smaller space. Furthermore, if you have a simple chair, you might not need that much wiggle room around your table.

The main idea is that you can comfortably move around the table but also sit down and have a comfortable meal.

RECTANGULAR TABLES

Rectangular tables are the most common table shape and great for any occasion. A romantic dinner for two or a family gathering, our rectangular tables will provide you with plenty of room and comfort so you can enjoy your mealtime.

When it comes to sizing, you will want at least 2 feet (24 inches) of length per person. This allows for enough room for a person to comfortably sit at the table. A 6 foot (72 inches) should comfortably sit three people on each side.

Here you also need to consider your overall room space. A small table in a large dining area might not be a great fit. If you have a large dining room, we’d recommend going with a larger table. While in some cases it may not add extra seating room (for example, going with a 7 foot table instead of 6 feet table), it will allow you to use wider chairs, create more space for serving dishes, but also fit in better with your larger space. Open concept or substantially large dining rooms sometimes call for a 9ft or a 10ft table.

In the end, it all comes down to what size of the table will fit in with your room space and needs.

ROUND TABLES

Round tables are another common table shape that is great for gatherings and general dining. Smaller round tables are exceptionally convenient for smaller spaces like condos. When it comes to choosing the right size for your round table, you’ll want to look at the same factors as with rectangular tables and that is your room size as well as the number of people that will be sitting at the table.

TABLE HEIGHT

Majority of dining tables are 28” to 30” high. At Toncha Hardwood, we go with a 30” height as a standard height of our tables. We’ve found this height to work well with most of our clients as it suits all dimensions and is ergonomically sound.

TABLE BASES AND LEGS

When it comes to the table base/legs, we focus on functionality and aesthetics, with functionality being our primary concern. No one wants to hit their knees or have to disturb others around them when they’re moving at the table. 2 leg styles (metal U-shape or wood legs) go well with rectangular tables as they provide plenty of leg room for everyone around the table without restricting anything. A pedestal base will work great for round tables, as well as banquet tables.

We have several common styles that we do, but we can also accommodate custom fabrication requests if you had something else in mind.
